Experimental Film Part 2

XX, dir. Vasja Lebarič, Julij Zornik (Slovenia, 2022, 11’)

An animated-experimental film which, in accordance with the process of creation – the chemical and thermomechanical processes – features coincidences as its immanent part and thus tries to surpass the conventions of traditional animation and narration.

Earth Water Motor II, dir. Markus Maicher, Cosma Grosser (Austria, 2023, 3’)

Cutting through landscapes with the machine. Destroying the postcard images of places we know. Part two of the Earth Water Motor series is filmed on sound stock with a 16mm Bolex, hand developed and edited in-camera. The film music is composed with an analogue synthesizer. Beginning in Bschabertal the series finds its continuation in Krumpendorf.

Steel Wool, dir. Jonathan Bower (UK, 2022, 4’)

10 years ago my dad died, and it seemed like I saw his body shutting itself down one cell at a time. I couldn’t get this idea out of my head – even when I wasn’t thinking about it, I was.

On lock-down during the pandemic I started filming whatever was to hand, and most of it came out looking like some idea of death.

In this film, ordinary domestic material becomes a representation of that obsession. Burning steel wool becomes neurons, lung capillaries, blood cells and ultimately cancer itself.

Nacre, dir. Erika Giulietti, Giorgia Benazzo (Italy, 2021, 4’)

“Nacre” is as a visual representation inside a liminal space of the creation process of our memories, experiences, perceptions: who we are.

Bad Day, dir. Christophe Guérin (France, 2022, 6’)

When a burglary goes wrong.

Memories of Youth, dir. Nathan Flores (Canada, 2023, 3’)

Grappling with the complexities of mental health and trauma in a digital age that feels isolating and overwhelming, a young person embarks on a surreal journey of self-discovery, navigating the raw truths of adolescence in an attempt to find a place in the world.

Clear Ice Fern, dir. Mark Street (USA, 2023, 12’)

Images shot through architectural glass on Super 8 film in the dead of night in NYC. The title refers to one of the glass samples I used to frame up images of Times Square and other nightspots in NYC. The city peeks its head in as an off screen character, but the glass bends and twists it in its own warped and wonderful way.
