Experimental Documentaries Part 1

Asterión, dir. Francesco Montagner (Czech Republic, 2022, 15’)

Asterión. Under the burning sun, a solitary bull awaits tireless, whilst a man jumps deep into the darkest waters of his persona, in their common attempt to defeat death.

In this silent visual poem, the massive body of a bull appears on the table of a meticulous taxidermist, having died in the hot sun in the middle of a bullfighting arena. Working with the body of an untamed animal, the man is inwardly transformed and finds in the animal’s skin a way to cope with his own mortality and the transience of life.

“It’s the story of a double fate, the one of the men and the one of the bull, both doomed to succumb to their own restless natures.”

Repetitions, dir. Yann les Jours (France, 2022, 4’)

Repetitions. 2 dancers, a choreographer and the director play their own role in this short movie showing a team in the act of making. In between the execution of those tasks emerges a short-term system of affects and common energies that paths the way to a deeper mutual field of understandings.

Extended Presences, dir. Margaux Anne Ali Dauby (Belgium, 2023, 13’)

‘Extended presences’ follows several women in their seasonal work as fire watchers in Portugal. The film comes close to their breathing, to the passing of time and to solitude, from within.

Eye-Skin, dir. Fanny Leiva Torres (Chile, 2022, 14’)

Eye-Skin travels through childhood memories, dreams, and present thoughts. In a minimum and close space roots intertwine, showing us through stories those bodies that go unnoticed around our everyday life. Eye-skin is a daily-video that brings us closer to neurodivergence in first person.

Film; about Lost, dir. Xiang-Sheng Zhu (Taiwan, 2022, 10’)

An old camera borrowed from a friend. It’s enough to be carried in my pocket. Since that day, I can forget to take wallet out, but I can’t forget it. We get along day and night, work, eat, hang out and meet friends all the time. And there is also every passenger photographed by it.
